Vintage Antique Circa1890s Bonnet in Blue Chambray with Lace Edg

These poke bonnets were named so because their brims extended beyond the face, so that the woman needed to “poke” her head outward to be seen. Worn in the gardens and fields, they shielded the woman from the sun! Actually, a well-bred woman did not want a tan. Women with tans were workers. Lily-white skin was a sign of wealth and social standing. This bonnet, in light-blue, light-weight chambray is quite pretty, with ruffles and lace edging. The brim of the hat extends 10 ½ inches. The shirred back of the bonnet is adjustable with bow ties. The inside of the bonnet measures 21 inches (adjustable). Under chin ties measure 18 inches. Amazing condition for an original work bonnet of almost 130 years old. A half dozen pin-hole and rust spots.
